What is a Timing Belt?

As a car owner, it is important that you understand some of the basic elements of a vehicle. One such element is the timing belt.

A timing belt, also known as a cambelt or timing chain, is a component of an internal combustion engine. A timing belt synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft with the camshaft. This coordination permits the valves in the engine to open and close at proper times. The valves must be times appropriately with the intake and exhaust strokes. A timing belt typically is one with teeth on the inside surface.
