What is Understeer?

One of the two possible steering issues you can experience while driving around is understeer. Understeer is a phenomenon where your vehicle refuses to turn at the same angle you are setting with your steering wheel. At issue is the safety of you and your passengers. When driving in town, the problem may be slight, but when you are on the highway and traveling at higher velocities, the problem is exacerbated.

Understeer is a product of slip angles—the difference between wheel angle and car heading. When you experience understeer, you are experiencing wheel slippage which comes from a lack of tire grip. Worn tread and hard acceleration through a turn are sure to create an understeer scenario.

The most common type cause of understeer is the early acceleration through a turn that overwhelms the front tire’s capability to grip the road. At Loving Honda, we can adjust your suspension to compensate.
